The Sanskrit word “YUJ” from which yoga is derived from means the union of the soul or individual consciousness with the universal awareness or spirit. Though most of us think of yoga as a physical exercise where people turn, stretch, twist and breathe in the most complex ways, it is only the most superficial aspect of this profound science. The science of yoga imbibes the essence of the way of life, unfolding the infinite potential of the human mind and soul.

On the one hand, Bhakti (devotion) is the practice of complete faith. This can be in the God or Supreme consciousness in any form. Karma, on the other hand, is the path of dedication to work or one’s purpose. A person who works and does good by others without any rewards or returns is known as a karma yogi.

The word kriya means “activity” or “movement” in relation to one’s consciousness. It can also refer to a practice resulting in total union, the pinnacle of practice. Kriya yoga does not affect mental fluctuations but nurtures activity and awakening in consciousness. In this manner, all faculties are in harmony and flower into delivering their full benefits.

Obesity is the condition of possessing excess body fat, often due to genetic and environmental factors and challenging to curtail with just dieting. Being obese increases your chances of developing related conditions such as Hypertension, Diabetes and Sleep Disorders, to mention a few. Many individuals who are affected by obesity are not aware of it.

Several symptoms of obesity include a fat and disproportionate body, breathlessness after physical effort, excess perspiration, back/joint pain, fatigue, excess sleep, snoring, depression, skin problems, etc. Yoga teacher training India

The normal causes of obesity include digestive disorders, lack of physical activity, a sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, hormonal imbalance, unhealthy diet, improper absorption of nutrients, heredity, excessive use of alcohol or smoking, age, reduced metabolism leading to fat deposits and increased weight, etc.

Related complications include health hazards like Diabetes, Heart disease, High levels of cholesterol, Osteoarthritis, Metabolic disorder, Unorderly Sleep patterns, Cancer, Breathing problems and even Stroke.

The yoga practice that includes Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and relaxation techniques are found to be of help in weight loss, reducing body fat and weight management. Reducing the excess fat and attaining an ideal body can be achieved through the regular practice of yoga. Yogic exercises or therapy is highly effective in the control and management of health.

Different yogic practices and health tips that can help in dealing with obesity are:-

Yogic food habits – Having a fixed schedule for meals, ensuring an interval of at least 4 hours between meals, having a low-fat diet with vegetables and fruits rich in fiber, reduced quantities of fats and excess calories, milk, butter, sweets, cheese, etc.

In addition, it’s wise to practice under a qualified yoga instructor after taking proper medical advice. Restrict your yoga practice to your own strength & physical abilities. Be warned that if overdone, it can turn harmful rather than beneficial.
